In Punta Allen, a small coastal town in the heart of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, the Fishing Cooperative Pescadores de Vigía Chico was founded in 1968. This Cooperative of 63 men and two women is one of the most united and recognized for its excellent fishery practices and operational management at an international level. The members convey an extraordinary sense of ownership and loyalty to their organization.
They are an example of sustainable artisanal fisheries management! In 2015 they hosted a group of specialists in marine conservation and sustainable fishing worldwide, convened by the international Sustainable Oceans Lab initiative, who visited Punta Allen to learn about the famous sustainable practices exercised by these bold fishermen.
